What to Expect on the Day
Pre-dawn drive from the city
You are collected from Johannesburg or Pretoria, or make your own way to the launch site near Skeerpoort, arriving before sunrise.
Inflation and take-off
You watch the crew inflate the balloon in the early light, climb into the basket, and lift off gently as the sun rises over the Magaliesberg.
The flight
For about an hour you drift over the Magaliesberg mountains, farmland and the Cradle of Humankind, and on the AirVentures flight over a game reserve with plains game below.
Sparkling-wine breakfast
After landing you finish with a sparkling-wine toast and a breakfast buffet, plus a flight certificate, before the drive back to the city.
What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)
✓ Bring
- Warm layers for the cold morning (cold in winter)
- Closed flat shoes
- A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Camera or phone with a wrist strap
- Cash for a tip
- Your booking voucher
✗ Leave behind
- High heels or loose sandals
- Loose scarves without straps

How to Choose a Good Balloon Operator
What good operators do
- Licensed with the South African Civil Aviation Authority
- Postpone or cancel when the wind or visibility is marginal
- State the basket size and passenger count clearly
- Include a breakfast buffet, a toast and a certificate
- Have a long track record and strong reviews
Red flags to avoid
- Market a countryside flight as a Big Five safari
- Overload the basket or hide the passenger count
- Pressure you to fly in borderline weather
- Offer no free cancellation or weather refund
- No clear licence or authorisation
