What to Expect on the Day

Pre-dawn hotel pickup
A 4x4 collects you from your Dubai or Sharjah hotel in the dark and drives out to the desert launch site, usually around 5:00am.
Pickup is early and the drive is long. Confirm your pickup time and location the day before.2
Weather check and briefing
The pilot checks the desert wind and gives a safety briefing. Dubai has calm, dry winter mornings, so cancellations are rarer than in Europe.

Inflation and take-off
You watch the crew inflate the balloon on the sand, climb into the basket, and lift off gently as the sun clears the dunes.

The flight
For about an hour you drift over the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, sometimes above 4,000 feet, watching for oryx and gazelle on the dunes below.
Keep your phone on a strap. The desert light at sunrise is the best you will get all day.5
Landing, falcon show and breakfast
After a soft landing on the sand, most tours add a falcon display, a camel ride and breakfast before the drive back.

What good operators do
- Hold a UAE (GCAA) commercial balloon operator licence
- Fly with permits inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve
- Postpone or cancel when the wind is marginal
- Include hotel transfers, a toast or breakfast and a certificate
- Have hundreds of recent, verified reviews
Red flags to avoid
- Fly without reserve permits or a clear licence
- Overload the basket or hide the passenger count
- Pressure you to fly in borderline weather
- Offer no free cancellation or weather refund
- Advertise prices that look too good to be true
